What is meant by road paving surface treatments?

Paving surface treatments consist of laying thin wearing courses, made up of layers of bituminous emulsion and crushed stone. These treatments are aimed at improving the functional and aesthetic characteristics of roads and squares. They protect and reinforce paving, prolonging its life and guaranteeing greater safety for users.

Single, double, and triple layer surface treatments

They are used on bituminous conglomerate paving to waterproof it and restore or improve its structural characteristics. They also ensure that surface water drains well, reducing the risk of aquaplaning and offering a fair degree of resistance to ice formation.

Depending on the number of wearing courses laid, surface treatments are distinguished as single or double layer. Single-layer treatment is used when the road surface, on which work is to be carried out, has lost its roughness (so it has reduced grip) but has no depressions or cracks. Double-layer treatment is preferable on uneven surfaces and/or with high traffic volumes, as it guarantees better load distribution on the underlying layers.

Road paving, also in private areas

Road paving benefits enormously from surface treatments (e.g. roughening) that improve performance for users and resistance to wear and weather conditions. The interventions are advantageous whether they involve high-traffic public roads or private areas where traffic is lighter but maintenance must be ensured for user safety.

Surface treatment advantages

Surface treatments offer numerous advantages:

  • in terms of durability, increasing the useful life of the paving by protecting it from wear and tear and weather conditions;
  • in terms of safety, improving grip and reducing the risk of accidents;
  • in economic terms, reducing long-term maintenance costs;
  • in aesthetic terms, improving the visual appearance of the treated surfaces.
