SAMI treatment – Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer – is used as a primer for high-performance asphalt and as a treatment for the preventive maintenance of paving.
Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI)
What is SAMI treatment?
SAMI is an intermediate layer that is generally placed between the old paving and the new layer of asphalt, with the aim of reducing the spread of cracks from the road base to the surface.
The membrane is made of a layer of modified bitumen emulsion – or modified bitumen – covered with grit or filler, which acts as a diaphragm to distribute stresses and prevent potential cracks from rising from the lower layers of the paving.
SAMI is highly elastic and adheres well to the surface and to the aggregates used for covering. Because of this, SAMI waterproofing membrane is also used as a bonding layer, with better performance when compared to traditional emulsions.
SAMI treatment details
Materials used for SAMI treatment
- bituminous emulsions modified with polymers, to create a flexible and resistant layer;
- selected aggregates of various kinds.
Application procedure
The application process for SAMI treatment generally involves the following steps:
- preparing the surface, during which the paving is cleaned and prepared for the application of the intermediate layer;
- simultaneously applying the modified bituminous binder and aggregate (or release agent) on the prepared surface;
- applying the new layer of asphalt (application and compaction).

SAMI treatment advantages
Crack prevention
SAMI treatment absorbs stress and strain, preventing cracks from forming in the paving and maintaining the road surface in excellent condition for a long time.
Improved durability
SAMI significantly improves the durability of the paving, reducing the need for frequent and costly maintenance.
Heavy load resistance
Since SAMI can absorb and distribute stresses, it is particularly effective in areas subject to heavy traffic, such as main roads, motorways, and industrial areas.
Cost-effectiveness
Applying SAMI treatment is an investment that pays for itself over time thanks to the reduction in maintenance costs and the increased longevity of the paving.
