What is triple layer dust suppression?
Triple layer dust suppression is a technique used to improve the surface characteristics of unpaved roads that generally have low traffic volumes, by reducing dust and mud. This method involves applying three layers of bituminous binder and selected crushed stone to the road surface, with the aim of:
- reduce dust and mud;
- make roads safe to use;
- waterproof the road surface.
Application procedure and materials
Dust suppression must be carried out on a suitably levelled and compacted foundation layer, in an unbound granular mixture or on lime and/or cement stabilised soil.
Triple layer dust suppression treatment utilises:
- bituminous binders to ensure the adhesion of the aggregates, the resistance of the paving and effective waterproofing;
- selected aggregates to improve wear resistance and help integrate the paving into the landscape.
